The Port of Ozamiz has a long and distinct history of its own which dates back in 1857, when it was chosen as the principal anchorage area of the Spanish conquistadors, and was made the seat of the military government. Since then and until now, the Port of Ozamiz, is still recognized as the “Gateway of Northern Mindanao.” It is located at the southern part of Ozamiz City, nestled at the entrance of the rich Panguil Bay in Northwestern Mindanao.

PPA took over the  Port of Ozamiz from the Bureau of Customs through PMU Iligan on August 1, 1977. The port became one of the Subports of PMU Iligan together with the ports of Kolambugan and Tubod in the province of Lanao del Norte and Jimenez, Misamis Occidental.

This setup lasted for almost 16 years until June 17, 1993, when PPA Board of Directors approved the recommendation to upgrade the status of PTO Ozamiz to Port Management Office (PMO) of Ozamiz through Board Resolution No. 1344. On February 25, 1995, PPA Special Order No. 106-95 was issued creating PMO Ozamiz, the fifth under the Port District of Northern Mindanao (PDO-NOMIN) and the first terminal to be upgraded and  was inaugurated on July 28,1995.Under its jurisdiction are the Base Port of Ozamiz, PTO Jimenez,  and other government and private ports located in the     provinces of Misamis Occidental covering a coastline of about 100  kms.
